I treated myself to a swift and winder on Black Friday. I purchased them from KnitPicks at a nice discount. I thought it wasn't a big thing to wind balls by hand but this is nice-especially since my husband did most of the work! We quickly wound 3 hanks of yarn into cakes.
I am working on a sockhead hat (pattern free on Ravelry). About half way through, the yarn had a knot and the yarn on either side of it was not dyed a tweed. I knitted a few rows to see how it would look but it was too obvious. I ripped out several rows and eliminated that part of the yarn.
This is yarn from Herrschners that I bought on sale on Ebay. I have made a cowl and I intend to make some fingerless gloves as well. I'm sure my niece will like them.
Check out the rest of the needle reports on Patchwork Times.
Congrats on the swift and ball winder, I still wind my yarn by hand. Every time I start looking at them I end up buying yarn instead.
ReplyDeleteI love my swift and winder! Your sockhead looks great.
ReplyDeleteEither my Dad or DH help me wind my balls by hand! There is a lady at quilting group and she is always very happy to bring in her swift and winder if asked. I have wound some yarn on hers and really like it! How nice for you to have your own now - it does make such a nice cake and one that you can use from both sides at the same time if you want. Cheers! Evelyn
ReplyDeleteLove the winder and swift. I never thought to have my big guy do the winding. Love the yarn for the hat

ReplyDeleteI need to get a swift and wonder for myself. I wind a lot of my skeins myself.. Yarn around my knees as I am winding it into a ball. I can only imagine what it looks like! :D
ReplyDeleteYou asked if I use DK yarn for my reading mitts... I use sock yarn and go down a needle size. They have turned out well and fit nicely. Happy knitting!!
Don't you just love free labor? LOL. I love a man that can work a swift and ball winder.
